Amsterdam

Top things to do

1. Anne Frank House

One of the most famous sights in Amsterdam is the Anne Frank House, which is where Anne Frank hid during WW2, and famously diaried her experience, before being captured and murdered by Nazis. This tends to sell out, so I would suggest buying tickets in advance, especially if you are planning on visiting during summer or the high tourist season.

2. Visit the Heineken brewery

This was a ton of fun, the brewery is both a historical museum and also a beer tasting. We spent nearly an entire day here, including boat ride that took us to some of sights of Amsterdam.

Recommended: do the Heineken Experience 25 euro includes canal cruise and they take you to the A’DAM lookout!

Inside the brewery!

3. Take a canal cruise — We did one with the Heineken Experience, which served Heinekens, but I would recommend doing one regardless if you visit the Heineken Brewery.

4. A’DAM Lookout:

Opened in 2016, A’dam Lookout provides some of the best views of downtown Amsterdam. The property’s main draw is its observation deck on the 20th floor, which provides 360-degree panoramas of the city’s port and canals. Theres also a giant swing attached at the top of the lookout, for visitors who want to try Europe’s highest swing.

5. Rijksmuseum museum

This is the State Museum, which features an impressive collection of artists, including Rembrandt and Vermeer. The museum mostly Dutch works from the 15th to 17th centuries.

6. Van Gogh Museum

Van Gogh Museum holds the world’s largest collection of Van Gogh’s paintings and drawings, including “Sunflowers” and “Almond Blossom.” This museum is conveniently located next to Rijksmuseum.

7. The Royal Palace of Amsterdam

Built in the 17th century, this palace used to serve as a town hall. The Royal Palace is oneof three palaces in the Netherlands which are at the disposal of the monarch by Act of Parliament. This palace is the official reception palace for the King. It is situated on the west side of Dam Square in the centre of Amsterdam, opposite the War Memorial and next to the Nieuwe Kerk.

Notable art work inside is a 6-metre-tall statue of Atlas carrying the Globe on his shoulders.

8. Moco Museum – this museum has Banksy, Roy Lichtenstein, among other artists.

9. Walk around the Canals – the canals are lined with all kinds of stores, including to be lined with cheese shops! All of which would offer us free samples. This was a lot of fun for me and my friend Julie!

10. Red light district

The red-light district is obviously one of Amsterdam’s most famous sites. Take a look around, but at your own discretion.

Note you are not allowed to take out your phones here, if you get caught someone will try to destroy your phone.

11. Go on a free-walking tour of the city:

When I was abroad my favorite way to get to know a new city. We did the Sandeman’s New Amsterdam Tours

12. Check out some of the “coffee” shops.

One of the most famous coffee shops is the Bulldog Cafe, which was one of the first ones to open in the city. There are now three of them, so make sure you visit the landmark one if you’re interested in seeing the history associated with the shop.

Other cool things to do:

  • Visit VondelPark- beautiful park to hang out
  • NDSM-werf: art space, old ship yard; takes art 12 min w/ free ferry NDSM-Werf by ferry. Supposed to be cool never went
  • Bloemenmarkt flower market: 9-5:30 pm fri & sat

Bars/Clubs:

  • Chicago Social Club – House music club
